For
those who don't know me, I am an Assist Prof here at Lynchburg
College. I earned a B.A. in Peace Studies (interdisciplinary study of
conflict resolution begun in 1948) at Manchester College, IN.
I earned a M.A. in Rhetoric, Communication Studies from California State University,
Sacramento, CA and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Communication Studies from The University
of Iowa. I have taught--since 1991--such courses as Argumentation, Group
Communication, Heroes as Persuasive Figures, Intercultural Communication, Public
Speaking, Organizational Communication,
Rhetorical Theory, Rhetorical Criticism, Research Methods & Rhetoric of the Vietnam War.
These have been both undergrad & grad classes.
My research fields include Rhetoric
(Theory & Criticism) and Media Studies, with a great many sidelines of
knowledge and interest folded into each endeavor. I
have
analyzed such varied texts as media news, ideological and political implications
to Hollywood films, Presidential speeches, & the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Mostly, I am interested in how we develop
identities & choices within & byond the boundaries of culture
. I am
a bit
obsessed since I can't even go to the movies without analyzing s/heroes. But I do have
other interests. In the last few years I've earned a black belt in
Shotokan Karate & become licensed as an EMT-B. I love to read & collect books insatiably. I also love talking
(too much?!). I will stop most anything for a conversation. BEST of all, I like to think
new thoughts.
